Exmouth
Exmouth is a popular tourist destination and has lots of things to see and do. Exmouth is well known as a regional centre for water sports – Sailing and Windsurfing. Exmouth is popular with ramblers and there are many beautiful walks. Exmouth has SSSI status (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Bird Watchers often visit Exmouth to see the unusual birds of the area.
Exmouth occupies a sheltered position on the eastern side of the River Exe. Until the 18th Century it was a small fishing village. Exmouth is mainly residential and owing to its position on the estuary there is little through traffic. The main shopping centre is situated around the Strand and the Parade where buses can be taken to visit nearby attractions, towns and villages. Nearby you'll find The Dock, Exmouth’s small harbour, where ships bring in timber from Scandinavia. Pleasure trips can be taken up the River Exe and up and down the coast, to the East as far as Lyme Regis and westwards to Torbay.
A ferry runs from Exmouth across the Exe to the Sandy Beaches. There are 2 miles of sandy beaches, which are clean and safe. Further eastwards Maer Bay and Sandy Bay offer pleasing bathing facilities. The Esplanade runs from the pier to Orcombe Point and it continues Eastwards to Marine Drive, from which extensive views over the sea can be enjoyed
